Tangancícuaro
is a Chichimecas word, it meaning "three
eyes instead of water", although other authors
give the meaning of "where stakes nailed
into the ground." The first meaning refers
to locations in the vicinity of the village: Junguarán,
and Cupatitzio Camécuaro.
The
municipal seat is the city of Tangancícuaro
de Arista. Tangancícuaro is at an altitude
of 1,700 meters above sea level, with an area
of 387.95 km². Its population was estimated
at 33,815 in 1996 and has a slightly negative
population growth attributed to emigration to
the interior and outside of the country. It is
bordered on the north by Zamora, Jacona and Tlazazalca,
to the east by Purépero and Chilchota,
to the south by Charapan, Los Reyes and Tingüindin,
and to the west by Tangamandapio. Its distance
to the State Capital is 134 kilometers. It has
three lakes: Junguarán, Camécuaro
and Cupatziro and the Duero river.
The economy is based on agriculture
with some industry and tourism. Tourist locations
include Camécuaro Lake and the National
Park of Camécuaro.
This is a potter’s adventure
among the villages and artisans of Michoacan,
one of the most diverse pottery areas in Mexico
and a beautiful landscape of lakes, volcanoes,
colonial cities and mud plastered villages. We
will visit Purepecha potters in seven indigenous
villages whose techniques range from purely pre-Colombian
in heritage to colonial Spanish. The pottery covers
the spectrum from functional cookware to ornately
decorated gallery pieces and just about everything
in between.

In a town dominated by
coniferous forest with Oyamel and pine and
mixed forest, the favorite places for camping,
climbing and mountaineering are Patamban
of Cerro Grande and Cerro Azul. Floara major
ecosystems and wildlife are concentrated
in the mountains and hills Patamban of Tangancícuaro.
Patamban is about 2 hours
from Pátzcuaro near San Jose de Gracia
and Ocumicho and is famous for its low-temperature
and high-temperature ceramics. We were lucky
enough to stumble upon an amazing ceramics
cooperative and a world-renowned ceramicist;
but there are numerous workshops and stores
in town, each with their own style and
traditions.
Each year, on the last
Sunday of October, the community of Patamban
organizes the traditional Feast of Christ
King, which attracts national and international
visitors. Its clean and stoned streets are
covered by precious saw-dust and flower
rugs, decorated with multicolored hanging
figures which await the pass of the Holy
Sacrament in the hands of the parish priest
who is followed by hundreds of faithful
who come to the procession |
