Tourist Attractions of Tangancícuaro
 

Tangancícuaro is a Chichimecas word, it meaning "three eyes instead of water", although other authors give the meaning of "where stakes nailed into the ground." The first meaning refers to locations in the vicinity of the village: Junguarán, and Cupatitzio Camécuaro.

 

The municipal seat is the city of Tangancícuaro de Arista. Tangancícuaro is at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level, with an area of 387.95 km². Its population was estimated at 33,815 in 1996 and has a slightly negative population growth attributed to emigration to the interior and outside of the country. It is bordered on the north by Zamora, Jacona and Tlazazalca, to the east by Purépero and Chilchota, to the south by Charapan, Los Reyes and Tingüindin, and to the west by Tangamandapio. Its distance to the State Capital is 134 kilometers. It has three lakes: Junguarán, Camécuaro and Cupatziro and the Duero river.

 

The economy is based on agriculture with some industry and tourism. Tourist locations include Camécuaro Lake and the National Park of Camécuaro.

 

This is a potter’s adventure among the villages and artisans of Michoacan, one of the most diverse pottery areas in Mexico and a beautiful landscape of lakes, volcanoes, colonial cities and mud plastered villages. We will visit Purepecha potters in seven indigenous villages whose techniques range from purely pre-Colombian in heritage to colonial Spanish. The pottery covers the spectrum from functional cookware to ornately decorated gallery pieces and just about everything in between.

| Church of Our Lady of The Assumption

The Church of the Assumption, dating from the eighteenth century, is located in the town. In view of the l985 earthquake asotó that the country also affects the callendose part of the building facade and one of its towers.

 

In the seventeenth century gave the name of the Assumption Tangancícuaro and the administration relied on religious Jacona while dependent on the civil jurisdiction of Zamora. City Council had in 1822, was 2.219 inhabitants engaged in agriculture and produce corn, wheat and lentils.

Lago de Camécuaro. In a town dominated by coniferous forest with Oyamel and pine and mixed forest, the favorite places for camping, climbing and mountaineering are Patamban of Cerro Grande and Cerro Azul. Floara major ecosystems and wildlife are concentrated in the mountains and hills Patamban of Tangancícuaro.

 

Patamban is about 2 hours from Pátzcuaro near San Jose de Gracia and Ocumicho and is famous for its low-temperature and high-temperature ceramics. We were lucky enough to stumble upon an amazing ceramics cooperative and a world-renowned ceramicist; but there are numerous workshops and stores in town, each with their own style and
traditions.

 

 

Each year, on the last Sunday of October, the community of Patamban organizes the traditional Feast of Christ King, which attracts national and international visitors. Its clean and stoned streets are covered by precious saw-dust and flower rugs, decorated with multicolored hanging figures which await the pass of the Holy Sacrament in the hands of the parish priest who is followed by hundreds of faithful who come to the procession

Very close to Tangancicuaro there is a rich handcraft and gastronomy region, where the more important communities are communities: Patamban, Ocumicho and San Jose, which are located on the skirts of the great mountain of Patamban, the second important elevation in the state of Michoacan; it's important to visit the Temple of St. Francis and the Temple of St. Peter in Ocumicho, without forgetting to visit the workshop-houses (women that work): polychrome ceramic in Ocumicho and the fine pottery in Patamban.
